Thai thriller 6ixtynin9 acquired for US remake

By Liza Foreman

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Submarine Entertainment's genre label Torpedo Pictures has acquired the English-language remake rights to the Thai thriller, "6ixtynin9," the filmmakers announced on Monday at AFM.

The original film was directed by Pen-ek Ratanaruang in 1999. The filmmakers are seeking writers and a director for the remake.

The original "6ixtynin9" is a fish-out-of-water story, which follows a young woman from a financial corporation comes home after being fired from her job. As she slams the door of her apartment in frustration, the screws fall out of the number six and turn into the number nine, causing a case of mistaken identity, involving the most dangerous gangsters in the city.

The Torpedo label is a joint venture between Submarine and producer Stanley Buchthal ("Hairspray"). It was launched in Cannes in May.

The company is looking to make three to four low-to-mid budget genre projects per year.
